Cheap and Cheerful Bank Holiday Ideas for Entertaining Kids

Quickly approaching is the last bank holiday before Christmas - the 25th of August. Officially the last summer bank holiday, the extra day off is a chance to make the most of the last bit of sunshine before the colder months set in. However, after 6 weeks of entertaining the kids over the summer holidays, it’s not surprising that many people end up struggling for ideas when it comes to bank holiday events. Leading discount retailer SportsDirect.com have made the task easier with their suggestions on some cheap and cheerful bank holiday activities.

The Great Outdoors
Teaching kids about the ‘great outdoors’ can be difficult when computer games are only increasing on the popularity scale. This year, Sportsdirect.com have made sure that there are plenty of online options to encourage kids to get out and enjoy their surroundings. Junior walking boots like the Campri Snowdon Walking Boots for children are ideal for those wanting to make the most of woodland wanders and days spent exploring. For making a full day of it, pack kids their own picnic in a rucksack like the Reebok Volume Backpack and head off for a day in the fresh air.

Sport
Another great way to get the family out in the sunshine is through sport. SportsDirect.com knows just how important it is to encourage kids with sport, constantly coming out with ranges to get them equipped for everything from football to table tennis. Whether it’s a quick game of badminton at the beach or a kick about in the park, there’s something that all the family can get involved with.

Rainy Day Camping
With weather in August often being unpredictable, getting outdoors isn’t always an option. For a rainy bank holiday well spent, get the kids to make their own den and camp out in the living room. The Edco Play Tent makes an excellent starting point for a spot of ‘indoor camping’ – just add board games and hot chocolate for the true rainy day experience.

The highs and lows of the London 2012 Anniversary Games

To mark two years since the London Olympics, the anniversary games took place in London this weekend just gone. In preparation for the event a temporary stadium was built around the horse guards parade ground and St. James’ park was transformed to accommodate a 2 mile track laid at the mall which allowed some spectators to watch events for free.

British athlete Will Sharman impressed spectators in the 110m hurdles, narrowly missing out on a three way photo finish with Ryan Wilson and Shane Braithwaite. Sharman finished 3rd place although the three athletes all achieved the same time of 13.24 seconds.

Tiffany Porter beat Australian rival Sally Pearson in the 100m hurdle while Chris Tomlinson leaped 7.94m to win the mens long jump.

Aside from the winners, British sprinter Richard Kilty was left disappointed and frustrated after failing to hear the gun go off and finishing last in his event.  He said “It was obvious, ask the other competitors, nobody heard the gun”.  Kilty saw the anniversary games as a confidence booster after saying, “This run was meant to be a confidence boost for the commonwealths and through no fault of my own it’s messed me up a little bit”. Although the race didn't go according to pan, fellow team mate Harry Aikines-Aryeetey managed to take first place with a time of 10.29 seconds.

The anniversary games were missing a few familiar faces, one of which being Olympic gold medallist, Mo Farrah. Due to injury Farrah sat out of the games in a bid to make this years commonwealth games. In a tweet from the BBC earlier last week, it was confirmed that Farrah would be fit for the commonwealth games. Long jumper Greg Rutherford was also missing from the event due to similar reasons with injury and hoping to recover in time for Glasgow 2014.

Overall the anniversary games were a great success and have been a fantastic opportunity for all athletes to practise their events prior to commonwealth games which start later this week.

Tour de France Grand Depart 2014 Is Almost Upon Us

In just a few short days, Tour de France Grand Depart 2014 will begin. This weekend 22 of the world’s top cycling teams will compete across 3 days covering a total of  546km throughout various locations in the UK. There will be 3 stages in the UK including Leeds, Yorkshire and Cambridge before the tour reaches French soil. In France there are a further 18 stages of the tour. The first stage sets off at 11am on Saturday 5th July in Leeds.

The second stage takes place on Sunday 6th July and riders will start at York and cycle down to Sheffield. The second day is the hill stage and cyclists will have many inclines to tackle throughout the ride which is 201km, the longest of all 3 stages. This route takes riders across to Addingham, down to Huddersfield and continuing down to Sheffield.

Wimbledon Is Well Under Way

This week Wimbledon got underway with the first round of the men and womens singles commencing on Monday and throughout the week the second single rounds and doubles first rounds also took place. Last years champion, Andy Murray has so far won all of his matches and is playing on top form. The annual championships is nearly half way through and the final takes place on the 6th July, next week. Murray will continue to play his best in order to retain his title, however he faces tough competition with other favourites playing at Wimbledon.

Some of the dark horses in this competition include Ernests Gulbis. The Latvian turned pro back in 2004 and has played in 6 Wimbledon championships. His best singles performance was last year in the mens singles third round. He currently ranks number 10 in the singles. Grigor Dimitrov is another favourite to do well. He is currently ranked 13 in the mens singles and has played at 4 previous Wimbledon championships. He has been playing tennis professionally since 2008. Finally, Milos Raonic of Canada is ranked 9 in the mens singles and is another player to watch. Since turning pro in 2008 he has took part in 3 Wimbledon championships.

andy murray wimbledon

Aside from the potential under dogs, there are four favourites to win the competition. Rafael Nadal is currently ranked number one in the singles and is a popular choice to win. Since turning pro back in 2001, Nadal has played in 9 Wimbledon tournaments. Nadal has previously won two Wimbledon tournaments back in 2008 and 2010. Last years winner Andy Murray is still in with a good chance of retaining his title for a second year. Murray ended Britain’s 77 years wait for a men’s single champion at Wimbledon in 2013, a year after he took home a gold medal in the 2012 London Olympics. Murray has been playing tennis professionally since 2005 and is currently ranked number 5 in the singles. Another favourite is Roger Federer, the Swiss pro has been playing since 1998 and has achieved virtually everything in his sport including 17 grand slam titles and an impressive 7 Wimbledon championships. Federer is currently ranked 4th in the singles. Novak Djokovic also has the potential to go ahead and win this years championships. Currently ranked number 2 behind Nadal in the singles. Djokovic has been playing pro since 2003 and won Wimbledon back in 2011.

Today the third round of ladies and gentlemen’s singles take place along with the first round of mixed doubles. Anticipation is high to see who will make it through to the later stages of the competition and which of the favourites or under dogs could be seen in the final.

SportsDirect.com Takes A Look At England’s Progress In The World Cup

Saturday 14th June saw England defeated 2-1 by 4x world champions, Italy in their first game of the World Cup. England have two matches remaining in which they will compete for a place in the next round. England ideally need to win their next two games, however there is a possibility for England to go through if they draw or lose any of the two games, depending on how the scores turn out for the other teams in their group. Wayne Rooney admits their next match is “do or die” and following criticism of his performance against Italy, the pressure is on to do well.

england badge

During Saturday’s match, Marchisio scored the first goal for Italy after 35 minutes, 2 minutes later Sturridge equalised for England. At 50 minutes, Balotelli headed in the second goal for the Italians to take the win. With a missed goal set up by Rooney, 2-1 was the final score. In the excitement of England’s equalising goal, the teams physio, Gary Lewin ended up being stretchered off with a dislocated ankle after falling on the astro turf. Lewin was flown back to the UK and is now waiting for surgery on his ankle following the event.

During the game, England had 44% possession of the ball and 18 shots, 5 of which were on target. Italy had 13 shots, 4 of which were on target. England had 9 corners and Italy 2 and finally England made 8 fouls, one of which Sterling was given a yellow card for, while Italy made 11 fouls.

England’s next game is tomorrow evening against Uruguay. Luis Suarez sat out of Uruguay’s first game due to injury but is fully fit again to play against England. With the exception of their most recent friendly in 2006, Uruguay have never lost a game against England at a World Cup, winning 4 and drawing 3 games.

Expectations may be low for England’s World Cup chances, however the possibility to go far in the competition is there. The England squad are now back in Rio at their training ground preparing for their next big game.

SportsDirect.com Takes A Look At England’s Preparations For The World Cup

With only 10 days until the World Cup 2014 kicks off, England’s preparations are off to a good start with a 3-0 win over Peru in the international friendly last Friday. The game at Wembley Stadium was England’s last match on home soil before the World Cup begins. During the game, Daniel Sturridge, Gary Cahill and Phil Jagielka all scored a goal each to secure the 3-0 win. Following their first friendly, the England team flew over to Miami, where they will be staying for the next week or so to play their next two friendly matches between Ecuador on the 4th June and Honduras on the 7th June. After these two matches, on the 8th of June the team will head to Rio De Janeiro ready for the start of the World Cup.

Official England Shirt 2014

England’s first game takes place on Saturday 14th June against Italy and will be played at Manaus Stadium. Shortly after they will play Uruguay at Sao Paulo on the 19th and Costa Rica at Belo Horizonte on the 24th June.  England’s approach to the World Cup is to study each game in detail and analyse potential opponents’ game tactics and weak areas. Football analysts Steve O’Brien and his assistant Mike Baker will compile the facts and statistics from each game and feedback to Roy Hodgson in Brazil. This research should give the England team a good insight into how to play against each competitor and know where their strengths and weaknesses lie.

With only 10 days to go, the opening match venue in Sao Paulo is not yet ready for the opening. Due to on going delays the Corinthians arena will be less than three quarters full for Sundays last test match to assess whether the stadium is ready. As it stands, with temporary seating unfinished, only 40,000 fans will be able to attend the league match. All facilities need to be tested and up to standards. Fire fighting authorities have not authorised the host club to open one of the seating areas and only 5000 fans will be able to watch from another unfinished seating  area. With so little time, the pressures on for the stadium to be completed.

The starting places for the England team are yet to be confirmed, however there is speculation as to whether Wayne Rooney will start, while Daniel Sturridge looks a strong possibility following his performance against Peru last Friday. Prior to kick off Roy Hodgson has told the boys they must sing that  national anthem and belt it out loud and proud. This will help build up emotions before they play. Fans across the UK are now gearing up for England’s first match in just under two weeks. With pubs set to open later and games being aired on national television, everyone will have an opportunity to watch the match live.

Staying Safe as festival Season Approaches

As Summer slowly approaches, festival season is almost upon us, a time for music, camping, friends and memories. In June the festivals kick off with Isle of Wight, Download and Glastonbury, through to July with Wireless, T in the park, Global Gathering and onto August with V Festival, Reading and Leeds, Creamfields and last but not least Bestival in September. With a jam packed few months of festivals to attend there will be many people gearing up for a big weekend, but what exactly should festival goers be packing? SportsDirect.com take a look at the risks such as theft that may happen during festivals and some of the facts and figures behind the rise and decline in festival attendance numbers.

Every year hundreds of thousands of people attend various festivals up and down the country. There are no typical festival goers and ages range from under 16, to over 65 and every one in between. According to Festival Insights, 53% of people enjoy the music aspect of festivals most, unsurprising as that is the main event of most festivals. However, 22% said they enjoyed escaping ‘normal life’ for a few days while a minute 3% enjoyed getting drunk more than any other activity at festivals. The biggest disappointment at festivals for 16% of people were their favourite bands clashing, 13% said the cost of food and drinks, 8% disliked the lack of clean showers and toilets, while 17% felt nothing damped their festival experience. When it came to home comforts 34% of people said they didn’t miss any of their home comforts, surprising to some while 26% said they missed a clean flushable toilet, 15% missed having a good signal on their mobile phones and 6% missed their beds.

Festival Insights reported that when questioned on the economic impact of going to festivals, 40% of people claimed it had no influence on their decision to attend another festival, 27% said because of the economic downturn they attended less festivals than usual and 14% said it delayed their decision to go. YouGov reported similar numbers with 32% of people feeling  festivals had become too expensive, while only 5% felt they were good value for money.

Each year there are hundreds of festivals up and down the country, both big and small, cheap and expensive. Some of the top festivals include Glastonbury, which has 177k attendees with tickets costing £210, Download holds 120k people and costs slightly less at £205, V Festival has 90k people and is the cheapest of the top four at £195 while Reading Festival, the smallest of the top four with 87k people surprisingly costs £210. According to The List, in 1994 the capacity of people at T in the Park festival was 17000 per day and in 2013 it rose to a whopping 85000 per day. In 2010, tickets for T in the Park sold out in a record 90 minutes.

Many festivals are prone to drug and alcohol abuse, whether it’s legal or illegal highs. The Guardian reported that in 2012 there had been a dramatic decrease in quantities of drugs seized at festivals since the previous 3 years. A study from 2008 to 2011 showed that confiscation peaked in 2009 however in total confiscations of cannabis, cocaine and ecstasy fell by over 65% and the amount dropped by a similar margin from £288420 to £101682. For parents allowing children to attend festivals, drug use can be a big worry despite the drop in numbers over recent years. All festivals have police in place to tackle problems with drugs and it is advised parents educate their children on the dangers and consequences prior to such an event.

Gelert Camping Tent

Another danger that can be prominent at festivals is theft. According to the Telegraph the total value of thefts at Glastonbury festival totalled £98,473. As the largest of all festivals it’s unsurprising that it has the highest number of thefts, however there are ways of ensuring belongings stay safe and out of the wrong hands. Firstly, don’t take any valuables. As mentioned earlier mobile signal can be poor at festivals, so taking an expensive smart phone is pointless, instead take a cheap, old phone for emergency use. Disposable cameras are a much safer option than digital and will be far less expensive to replace if lost or stolen. Wear a money belt to store cash and avoid bags that are easy to pick pocket from. Finally, lock up the tent whenever it is unoccupied using a small lock similar to those used on suitcases. This is a simple way to ensure piece of mind that any tents and belongings are safe.

With thousands of people and lots going on it’s important to stay safe and be aware of all surroundings. Although the most important thing is to have fun and enjoy the music, festival goers should be cautious of when attending festivals in order to stay safe and have a great time.

The Europa League Finals

On Wednesday 14th May, the final game in the Europe League will take place in Turin at the Juventus Stadium. The two finalists are Sevilla and Benfica, who have each won 4 rounds throughout the Europa League, to make it this far. Benfica were last years runners up after losing 2-1 to Chelsea in the final, but do they have what it takes to win this time around?

Led by manager Jorge Jesus, Benfica are the first side to reach a UEFA Europa League final without losing a game. The final next week will be Jorge Jesus’s 50th game as a coach in the UEFA Europa League.

The two teams top goal scorers are Lima for Benfica, with a 4 goal record throughout the competition and for Sevilla, Kevin  Gameiro with 5 goals and Carlos Bacca with 4. Throughout the Europa league, Sevilla have scored a total of 22 goals, while Benfica have scored 14.

During all of the previous games, Sevilla have a total of 77 on target shots, while Benfica have 37. However, Sevilla also have a high number of off target shots at 72, with Benfica only aiming 28 off target. Overall Sevilla have a higher number of statistics with goal attempts, corner, off sides and even yellow cards.

The qualifying round for next years Europa League will take place between the 3rd July and 28th August, while the competition itself takes place from the 18th September, finishing on the 27th May. The final will be hosted at The Stadium Narodowy in Warsaw.

This annual football event overlaps with other such as the Champions League and shortly followed by the world cup, later this year. Playing football requires excellent teamwork and negotiation to ensure you have a plan to beat the opposition. Training is very important along with regular exercise to maintain fitness levels prior to playing. To help enhance game play, wearing the correct attire is also important, for example  heavy, cotton material is unsuitable as it holds sweat and adds unnecessary weight. Light and airy base layers are ideal to keep the player cool and free to move.

SportsDirect.com Takes a Look at The Badminton Horse Trials

On the 7th May this years Badminton Horse Trials begin, an event in which riders and their horses take part in three phases of the competition including cross country, dressage and show jumping. The event begins on Wednesday 7th May with the first inspection, followed by two days of dressage, a cross country test and finishing on the final day with the jumping test.

Horse wearing a turnout rug

The first inspection involves all horses being checked over by a vet to ensure they are fit and healthy enough to take part. The first phase of the competition is the dressage, which takes place over two days. Dressage involves a test of 26 movements each worth a maximum of 10 marks. Additional marks are also awarded for submission, rider, paces and impulsion bringing the top score to 300. Penalties can also be added if movements are not performed correctly.

The second phase of the competition is the cross country test, the most physically demanding part of the event. There are around 45 jumps to be made throughout the test and there is a set time limit in which to complete each jump. Failure to do so in the set time will result in a penalty.

After the second phase horses are taken for a final inspection to ensure they are still fit and healthy after the cross country test has been completed. Once they have passed the inspection they are then able to complete the final phase of the event, show jumping. Horses and riders must demonstrate speed, accuracy and agility in this test by completing a course of show jumps. Jumps can be up to 1.30m high and 2.30m wide. UEFA Champions League Semi Final

Last night was the first of four semi final games in the UEFA champions league and saw Chelsea take on Atletico Madrid at the Vicente Calderon stadium in Madrid gathering a crowd of over 52,000 fans. The champions league began with the first leg on the 18th February with a round of 16 followed by the quarter finals and now the semis. The four qualifying teams are Chelsea vs. Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich vs. Real Madrid who will each play two games to determine the two qualifying teams for the final, which will be held in Lisbon on the 24th May.

Throughout the competition Atletico Madrid have scored 22 goals in total with 8 wins and 3 draws. Chelsea have accumulated 18 goals with 6 wins, 2 draws and 3 lost games.  Bayern Munich have achieved 24 goals with 6 wins, 2 draws and 3 lost games. Real Madrid have managed to gain 32 goals with 8 wins, 1 draw and 1 lost game.

Atletico Madrid have never previously made it this far in the UEFA champions league and have waited 40 years to reach the semi finals. Throughout the competition they have had a perfect home record until last night where both teams failed to score any goals.

Real Madrid are on excellent form and with Cristiano Ronaldo back in training after a knee injury, things are looking hopeful if the top goal scorer is fit to play again after missing the past four games. Real Madrid have been knocked out in the semi finals by German teams for the past 2 years and in 2012 Bayern Munich beat them on penalties to make it through to the finals.

Tonight, Real Madrid take on Bayern Munich in the first leg of their semi finals at Santiago Bernabeu stadium in Madrid, kicking off at 20:45. Following this on the 29th and 30th April the second leg of the semis will commence with Bayern Munich and Real Madrid playing at the Allianz Arena in Munich and Chelsea taking on Atletico Madrid at Stamford Bridge in London. The two teams with the most goals across the first and second leg of the semi finals will then go head to head in the final later in May.

Easter Staycations On The Rise

Join in on the conversation at www.Facebook.com/SportsDirectUK or www.Twitter.com/SportsDirectUK
Easter is only a few days away and with a four day weekend to look forward to, many families are off on their holidays. Tighter budgets and the economic downturn mean many people have been looking to save some pennies and get a better deal on this years Easter break. This has led to many Brits opting for a staycation and exploring more of what the UK has to offer. Sportsdirect.com takes a look at some of the reasons and statistics people are staying close to home this Easter.

According to Visit England, in 2013, 2.7 million people  took their Easter break in the UK and this year is set to see a similar figure. It is estimated that UK holidays will generate a huge £2 billion to boost the economy. Hotel chain Travelodge,  reported that this year 65% of people are planning to spend their holiday in this country, compared to 41% and 35% from the previous two years. 22% of people say they’re taking more  holidays in the UK and less abroad.

There are many reasons for the boost in UK holidays compared to abroad, predominantly, the economic downturn has a lot to be blamed for. Visit England reported that the main reasons for choosing to stay in the UK were:

Visiting family and friends
Cheaper than going abroad
They like England
Exploring somewhere new
Returning to a place they've been before
Easy to plan a last minute trip
Easier to holiday in England
They got a good deal
Recommended by friends or family

Along with these reasons, there is also a huge variety of locations, attractions and sights to see right here in the UK. When it comes to entertaining children over the Easter holidays there are plenty of day trips and short stay trips for holidaymakers to choose from.

When booking up short breaks there are lots of last minute and special offers to be found. It is easy to pick up all of the essentials whether it's a last minute trip or planned well in advance. For short trips  with the family, holidaymakers can invest a large family suitcase to fit everyone’s belongings in and save some extra room in the car. There are also lots of travel accessories including games for the journey to keep children entertained on the way.

England's World Cup Shirt Revealed

Monday 31st March saw the launch of this years England shirt, which will be worn during the World Cup in Brazil over summer. You can now pre order your England kits from Sportsdirect.com and they will be available to buy from the 3rd April. England were one of the last teams to reveal their new kit with other countries such as Germany, Italy and Brazil themselves revealing their kits earlier this year. The World Cup kicks off on the 12th June with hosts Brazil competing against Croatia in the very first game. England’s first game against Italy will take place on the 14th June.

This years shirt has been stripped back to basics and accompanies an all white kit and alternative red and white kit to be worn during the games in Brazil. The white shirt features a subtle pinstripe design along with satin strips along each shoulder. The shirt has an original cut off overlapping v neck collar along with the Nike swoosh logo and of course the 3 lions crest.

The inspiration behind the design appeared to resemble the 1970s kit worn by Sir Alf Ramsey’s defending champions. In 1966, when England won the World Cup for the first and only time to date, the teams performance was not so entertaining and the players put their efforts into playing the game well, rather than putting on a show for the excited fans watching. This years shirt represents this attitude towards the game and focuses on the performance enhancing qualities the kit brings to players, rather than the aesthetic design to appeal to fans.

As the World Cup is being hosted in Brazil, the temperatures will be significantly higher than those players are used to back home. Whilst designing this years kit, Nike have utilised their current technologies to ensure the kit they provide for the England team will enable them to play in such heat and to maximise comfort throughout each game. With built in Nike Dri Fit technology the England kit has sweat wicking properties within the dual knit fabrication that helps pull moisture away from the body into a separate layer of material where it can evaporate. This will enable the player to stay cooler and dryer and therefore more comfortable, thus improving performance start to end.

When the shirt was revealed earlier this week there were mixed reactions from fans. Many were outraged at the price of the players shirt, with exact copies costing up to £90. Others were impressed by the design and features of the kit and with replica shirts costing a lot less than exact copies, fans can still get behind their team and #wearwithpride this World Cup.

The Best Waterproof Jackets for Spring

Last week marked the first day of spring and although that means lighter morning and nights it also means that there is a higher chance of rainfall, commonly known as April showers. SportsDirect.com take a look at what styles to look out for in raincoats to help keep dry and protected this season.
Waterproof jackets are a staple for a spring wardrobe and over the years have been designed and tailored to suit individual needs and tastes.

Sporty
For sportsmen and women having a jacket that is suitable for when the showers come is essential so that they can keep on training. However, as they are often unpredictable it is important that the jacket of choice is super lightweight, easy to stuff into a small bag, or tie round the waist, and is breathable to ensure comfort, like the Karrimor XLite running jacket. Having elasticated cuffs and toggles is also a desired quality as they will prevent the rain and wind from seeping through.
Explorer
When looking for a waterproof coat that is suitable for walking or hiking in, it’s important that it is both waterproof and breathable, but has a lining and has a thinker shell that that of a sporting raincoat. Three in one jackets, like the Regatta Calter 3 in 1 jacket, are a great option as walkers can store the waterproof in their backpack, and just wear the fleece when it is dry, then slip on the jacket when the rain starts to pour.
Fashionista
In recent years raincoats have been seen up and down the catwalks and have become increasingly stylish. A coat with taped seams, a bold colour and chunky detailing, whether it be pockets, buttons or toggles spruces the practical waterproof and makes it fun and fashionable, like the Regatta Bayeux jacket. For festival fashionistas then a lightweight rain jacket with a funky pattern such as spots and raindrops is essential for showing off a bit of style whilst staying dry, Golddigga have a selection of patterned raincoats that are ideal.
Visit www.sportsdirect.com for their full selection of waterproof jackets to suit all activities and tastes.

Run Further With Karrimor

The lighter nights and brighter days of spring often mean that runners will begin to look at going on longer runs, especially if in training for a marathon or charity run. A steady increase of distance and gradient is perhaps the best way to achieve results from training, however, having the right running gear can also help to improve performance.

Having a pair of responsive and supportive running shoes, coupled with clothing that helps to wick away sweat, plays a big role in increasing running time and distance. If a runner is uncomfortable they will not run for as long or push themselves as much as a runner who is.

Running brand Karrimor, available at SportsDirect.com, have incorporated the latest technologies in both their running shoes and clothing lines to ensure that runners and athletes get the most out of training.
Karrimor’s range of running shoes include the Duma and D30 models which all aim to provide the athlete with a flexible and comfortable running experience. The Duma running shoes start from £39.99 and feature a flexible, waffle print sole, coupled with mesh detailing for breathability and a moisture wicking insole, to avoid bad odours and discomfort.

The D30s start from £60.00,and benefit from shock absorption and gel technology to lessen the impact on hard surfaces. They also feature underfoot support torsion control, a lightweight construction and a clutch counter to the heel for improved stability and control which is advantageous when runners are picking up speed and changing direction often.

Within the Karrimor clothing range is their line of XLite running tights and tops that aim to make running easier and more enjoyable, in  a bid to help the runner run for longer. The XLite technology works to produce a lightweight item, without sacrificing the durability or breathability which are both major qualities in running clothing. The XLite running t-shirts and shorts start from £5.00, with some also incorporating reflective detailing for higher visibility.

An Introduction to the MMA Essentials

MMA combines a range of different martial arts, as the name suggests, including Muay Thai, Judo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Karate. A lot of skill and technique is involved in MMA and for this reason, beginners need to be well equipped to avoid injury and progress.

Due to the amount of disciplines that are involved in MMA
it can be hard to distinguish what is needed when taking up the sport. As MMA is a full body combat sport it is essential that the appropriate clothing is worn. The nature of the sport means there is a lot of close body contact which is why rash guards are a must as they offer muscle support, incorporate moisture management technology and won’t restrict movement. Long sleeve rash guards are advised, predominantly because less skin is exposed and therefore reduces the chance of contracting skin to skin conditions, as fighters get extremely close to their opponents.

Next on the list is protection. MMA is considered to be a dangerous sport, some people think it is more dangerous than boxing, others don’t, but there is one thing for certain  - that protection is always needed. Punching, kicking and grappling are all ways to knock out the opponent so the whole the body needs armour.

For wrist support and protection against damaging delicate bones in the hands, handwraps are a necessity, but they do need to be properly secured.  When grappling, shin guards and knee pads  need to be worn to be worn, especially when practicing takedowns. Special grappling shin pads are available and are designed to allow flexibility and stay on for longer. Mouth guards and gum shields are also required during striking practice and should be moulded to the individual for the perfect fit.

There are a range of different gloves that are suitable for MMA, including grappling, striking and kickboxing gloves, but the main specification to look out for is that they are at least 14/16oz otherwise, if they are too light,  it could cause harm to the opposition.

All of the essentials from top MMA brands such as Tapout, Lonsdale and MMA Elite can all be found SportsDirect.com. Visit http://www.sportsdirect.com/mma-and-martial-arts for their full range. Join the conversation on Facebook and Twitter.

Winter Olympics – An Inspiration To Everyone

Team GB bought home four medals at Sochi 2014, including two for curling, one for skeleton and one for snowboard slopestyler, making it the most successful Winter Olympics for Great Britain since 1924. SportsDirect.com take a look at what effect this will have on the bigger picture when it comes to sport.

Although Britain is not renowned for having natural snow this didn’t hinder the Olympians, and it shouldn’t put people off from trying sports such as snowboarding or skiing. There are over 50 indoor centres and dry slopes available across the UK, as well as mountains up in Scotland where people can train, making winter sports ready available for people to give a go and try out.

Jenny Jones, who won bronze at the Olympics for snowboard slopestyler, told the BBC that winter sports are much more accessible than what people initially think. The coverage from Sochi highlighted winter sports in a very positive light and helped to make people more aware of winter sports.

However, the Winter Games didn't just help raise the profile of winter sports, it also covered women in sport, which perfectly coincided with Sports Minister, Helen Grant’s statement, saying that women should be asked what they want to do when it comes to sport.

Three of the four medals that Team GB won in Sochi were from female athletes which can only encourage and reiterate Helen Grant’s view. Media coverage obviously plays a major role in profiling women in sport, and undoubtedly women’s sport is not given as much airtime or attention as what men’s sport is, but with the success of female athletes in both the Summer and Winter Olympics there may well be a shift towards focussing on women’s sports.

Ensuring that there are plenty of opportunities and choice when it comes to women being active and participating in sports also plays an important role in developing awareness and inspiring girls, and women, to take up something new and get involved.

Increase Fitness With Boxing

New fitness and health fads are always popping up, but some of the most effective workouts have been around for years, centuries even. Take boxing for example, it is a great all body workout and has stood the test of time. SportsDirect.com take a look at the health benefits of the sport and what equipment is needed.

Boxing, dating back to Ancient Greek and Roman times, has come a long way over the years and although essentially it incorporates  the same components, it is a lot less violent, there are more rules and there is a lot more protection on offer.

Modern day boxing is much more than a slugfest brawl and is more about discipline, accuracy and stamina. Now, popular across many gyms, and even venturing into a popular fitness class, Boxercise®, the combat sport has numerous health and fitness benefits.

First of all, it is an aerobic exercise so will help with weight loss as well as improving cardiovascular fitness levels which is essential for improving the heart and lungs efficiency.  Many people think that boxing is just throwing punches, but there is a lot of technique involved, including attaining the right footwork to keep moving and have the right stance when required.

As well as aiding weight loss, boxing is also a great sport for gaining muscle strength, especially in the upper body, as well as increasing muscle tone and definition in the arms, core and back, without using weights.

As Bupa.com have said, boxing does require ‘good hand-eye coordination to punch a pad’, but this can be worked on throughout training. Through focussing on intense movements in rapid stints, each in different directions, agility will also be increased which is an important part of fitness and will enhance defence skills.

Protection is essential, and it is important to be well equipped with the correct gear. SportsDirect.com have a broad range of boxing equipment and accessories that are suited for beginners and training purposes, and have the latest lines from top boxing brands such as Lonsdale and Everlast, including the Lonsdale XLite boxing gloves that incorporate new cutting edge technology.

SportsDirect.om’s Guide to Keep the Children Active During the Half Term

For most, February half term will begin on Saturday 15th February for one whole week, and keeping the children occupied and ensuring their days aren’t filled with video games, computers and the TV can be a challenge. However, there are plenty of sporting activities that kids will love to try out. SportsDirect.com take a look at just some on offer.

With the weather forecast not looking any brighter for the next couple of weeks, the options of going camping or heading to the local park for a kick about have gone out of the window. However, there are plenty of sports or activities that children can do indoors.

Free
Doing something everyday costs a small fortune, however there are activities available for free. The majority of leisure centres have offers on during the school holidays which entitle children to swim for free. Whether it’s fun swim, lane swim or public swim, it doesn’t matter, swimming has so many health benefits and is a great way to get children active as it is fun, and most importantly doesn’t feel like exercise. Alternatively, many leisure centres also offer free incentives, such as free badminton or squash court hire to their members, so it is worth checking out.

Spend
For families who are planning to have a few days out during the half term then there are a whole world of indoor activities that won’t cost the earth. Indoor climbing walls are situated up and down the country and are great fun for children and parents alike. Similarly, indoor skate-parks are just as exciting and thrilling, with sessions costing around £13.00 and lessons being available, indoor skate parks are perfect for both beginners and children who have tried it out before.

Treat
With the Winter Olympics underway, heading ice-skating or to the dry slopes is the perfect option for the school holidays. With prices starting around £15.00-£25.00per person for recreational skiing, it is a great treat option. Also, many ice-rinks offer themed days and evenings to make the experience even more fun.

Research the local leisure centres and area to see what they have on offer, it may come as surprise how much fun the children have trying out a new sport!

The History of the Six Nations

The Six Nations is one of the biggest rugby union championships, lasting over seven weekends throughout February, March, and occasionally April, with the six teams playing each other to get the most points and win the trophy. SportsDirect.com take a look at the history of the tournament.

Kicking  off on Saturday 1st February and running up until 15th March, Six Nations includes England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, France and Italy with each team playing each other once. Playing both home and away, each team is awarded two points for a win and one point for a draw and the team with the most points at the end of the tournament wins. If the winning team has also won all of their five matches throughout then they will also be rewarded with the title of ‘Grand Slam’ winner.

This year is the 120th edition of the championship, but it hasn’t always been called the Six Nations. In 1871 the first ever rugby union international match was played against teams from England and Scotland, which in turn inspired Ireland and Wales to take part too in 1883. The tournament was then renamed the Home International Championship and helped to spread the concept of rugby throughout Europe.

France officially joined the Home International Championships in 1910, and the tournament was therefore renamed the Five Nations, and eventually became the Six Nations once Italy collaborated in 2000.

It is fair to say that the Six Nations has been a slow burner in terms of its progression and becoming what it is today, even the trophy, that is commissioned by the Royal Bank of Scotland,  wasn’t introduced until 2006.
The first weekend of the 2014 Six Nations saw Ireland, Wales and France all win, with two points each, leaving England, Italy and Scotland on zero points, but with another seven days full of matches the tournament is wide open.

SportsDirect.com Take a Look at Planning for a Skiing Holiday

In a bid to banish the January blues and take advantage of the sale period, January is the opportune time when people start to look at booking a holiday and see what’s available. Skiing can be an expensive holiday but with travel agents and online travel companies slashing their prices, it is worth taking a look at their offers across ski resorts. SportsDirect.com take a look at how to plan for a skiing holiday.

The majority of European ski resorts are open between November and March, with Christmas, February Half Term and Easter being the prime times for people to head up to the slopes, therefore being the most expensive. According to skicusine.co.uk, January has the best deals for European ski resorts and it tends to be a lot more quiet and peaceful, opposed to any other time in the year.

There is a risk of poor skiing conditions in the run up to the end of the season, however the days will be longer, leaving more time on the slopes, plus there is more chance of catching some rays from the sun and it therefore not being as cold.

For first time skiers it is always best to book onto a few skiing lessons beforehand and improve on cardio-vascular fitness as well as core strength to ensure that the slopes won’t be too challenging, fitness wise. Running, cycling, squat reps and sit-ups are all great ways to prepare.

When it comes to skiing equipment, most of it, such as ski boots and skis, can be hired from the resort, and it means no cost for transporting bulky items on flights, however there are some essentials that every skier will need. SportsDirect.com have a great range of ski jackets, trousers, goggles, base layers, hats and gloves that have all been especially designed for skiing. Their Helly Hansen, Nevica and Campri ranges all have a fantastic selection of ski clothing and accessories, and their prices won’t break the bank.

Even after having a few ski lessons on dry slopes,  it is always best to have a professional ski lesson to ensure safe skiing, and they will be able to provide guides as to which slopes to try out first and which ones to avoid.

Each of the new designs are available in both SG and FG and are perfect for players who don’t want to fork out for the big brands, but equally don’t want to compromise on quality or performance.

The Sondico Flair football boots were the first boots to be released. They also benefit from a textured forefoot for a superb grip which in turn will increase control of the ball and improve responsiveness, comfort and confidence.

For players who are slightly more advanced, then the Sondico Precision football boots, at £39.99 are ideal. Benefiting from Poron Performance Cushioning foam for shock absorption and increased resilience, these football boots also reduce the likeliness of injury. They also feature a padded forefoot to provide the player with greater control over the ball.

Constructed from Kangaroo leather the Sondico Touch football boots at £59.99, have a softer, lighter feel and provide a stronger construction when compared to the other boots. Transfer Deadline Day: Shocks of the Past

Transfer deadline day occurs twice a year; the 31st January and 31st August. Every year thousands of people take holidays from work and watch the final hours unfold as they pray their teams have pulled some wonder deal that will carry them through the season. Many football transfers have taken place already in the month of January but the Premiership big fliers have been quiet to date. History shows they like to make their mark and it is almost certain this year will be the same.  To get you in the spirit for this year’s D-Day, here are a few shocks of the past. Do you remember them?

First up who could forget Ashley Cole’s move to Chelsea, swapping places with William Gallas. Issues with the transfer fee meant this awaited transfer only just took place and fans were left biting their nails to the final seconds. Dimitar Berbatov’s move from Tottenham Hotspur to Manchester United is a worthy contender since his transfer fee cost United a hefty £30.75 million. Everyone was confused how West Ham pulled off the transfer of Argentinian duo, Javier Mascherano and Carlos Tevez in 2006 but they both went on to make their name in the Premiership with Mascherano heading to Liverpool, and Tevez making his way to both Manchester United and Manchester City a few seasons later.

Transfer deadline day has seen some crazy last minute purchases and some unexpected shockers over the years. David Beckham and family were seen looking at schools in England in 2013 and it was assumed he’d be heading back home, yet transfer deadline saw him announce a move to Paris St-Germain where he would play for free and donate his wages to charity. This month is building up to yet another D-Day where there is sure to be more exciting surprises.  Keep tuned on the 31st January where footballing history will be made again.

What are your predictions for transfer deadline day?

Sports Nutrition – New Year Diets

The top New Years resolution in 2014 was to lose weight, unsurprisingly. But how many people actually manage to see their resolutions through? Studies show that only 8% of people are successful in keeping their resolutions, and many people give up in the first week, especially when it comes to weight management. On average Britons spend £37m per year on wasted gym and slimming classes.

The truth is, many people lie to themselves. Missing out sly snacks when calorie counting, rounding a 40 minute jog up to an hours exercise or justifying calorific treats because you’re having a salad for tea. If you really want to get fit, you have to be honest about how unfit you are to start with.
To conquer a new diet or fitness regime you need to be realistic. Don’t force yourself to work out like a body builder when you haven’t actually been to the gym since last years resolution.

The trick is to make small changes, gradually. Don’t expect to lose 10lbs in the first week, or even the second. 12 weeks should give you good, measurable results and you’re less likely to suddenly regain any weight because you’ve stuck to a routine for a significant period of time. When you see the results you will feel a lot more motivated to stick at it.

Be kind to yourself, banning your favourite foods will only make you crave them more. Instead, have smaller portions, less frequently as a treat. Once you start losing weight and feeling fitter you’re more likely to lose your appetite for these foods and opt for healthier choices to keep up your hard work.

To be successful on a new fitness regime you need to work changes into your daily life. Attend gym classes or swimming sessions once or twice a week to begin and don’t expect to be able to go to the gym seven days a week, because lets face it, that’s pretty unrealistic! Amend your diet to eat healthier foods more often and unhealthy foods in smaller and less frequent quantities. Be wary of your portions sizes as this is an easy way to cut down your calorie in take without even realising.

You should aim to do 150 hours of exercise per week. This could be a long stroll, a gym session or a swim. Mix it up and keep yourself interested and motivated. Set realistic monthly goals to work towards and don’t expect too much from yourself. Remember to praise yourself when you’ve had a good workout or have lost a few pounds as positive rewards will help keep you motivated.

SportsDirect.com’s Guide to Getting the Whole Family In The Pool

Recent articles have expressed that children, all around the World, are physically less fit than what their parents were when they were the same age. Higher body mass index and increased weight has been made accountable for this, according to exercise physiologist, Grant Tomkinson, as well as lower levels of exercise. SportsDirect.com take a look at how family swims can tackle this issue.

Swimming is one of the best forms of exercise when it comes to utilising the majority of muscles in the body and  helps improve aerobic fitness. Being a low-impact sport, it is not too strenuous on children, but it will make a difference to their overall level of fitness and keep them active.

Aerobic fitness levels have also decreased in adults, and lack of exercise could increase chances of a heart disease or stroke. Swimming for an hour burns approximately 500 calories and acts as a mini resistance workout, due to the fact that water is about 800 times denser than air, so it is a great way to shape up.

Going swimming as a family has numerous benefits. Parents will be motivated to go and do exercise and it will be more of a fun and sociable activity for children, instead of them sticking to just swimming lessons. By the whole family heading down to the local pool, it will also help children’s confidence in water as they will become more familiar with it, and it will help to develop their swimming skills.

Children won’t necessarily see swimming as a chore either as it can be made fun too. Parents can alternate between more ‘serious’ swimming, such as lane swimming and ‘fun swim’ which involves slides and inflatables. Therefore they will be increasing their aerobic fitness as well as having family fun.
