From the 22nd – 25th May, the annual PGA Championship takes place in Wentworth. This year marks the 60th anniversary of the PGA Championships and is also 30 years since Wentworth became the permanent home of the championships. The current champion is Matteo Manassero, who won last year with a score of 278, 10 under par. Taking a shot at the title this year is reigning US Open Champion, Justin Rose along with two time former champion Luke Donald.
Prior to the event on the 21st May, the celebrity PRO-AM event takes place, in which more than 50 celebrities tee off alongside many of the worlds greatest golfers. This special event attracts thousands of spectators and advanced tickets are selling out fast. Amongst the famous names, there are many sportsmen from different backgrounds including football, tennis, rugby and the Olympics. There are also musicians, TV presenters and many others taking part.
The footballers taking part in the event include Jamie Redknapp, Matt Le Tissier, Glen Hoddle, Teddy Sheringham, Peter Schmeichel, David Ginola, Andriy Shevchenko, Gianfranco Zola, John Arne Riise and Daniele Massaro.
In other sports, cricketers Sir Ian Botham, Alan Lamb, Brian Lara and Andrew Strauss. Rugby players Chris Robshaw, Ben Foden, Mike Tindall, Keith Wood and Sir Clive Woodward. Olympians Eve Muirhead, Sir Steve Redgrave and Sir Matthew Pinsent. Tennis players Time Henman and Greg Rusedski and finally formula one drivers, Damon Hill, Tiff Needle, AP McCoy, Mike Fitzgerald and Carl Llewelyn.
In showbiz, Mike Rutherford, founding member of genesis and Keane front man, Tom Chaplin. Former model Jodie Kidd and Strictly Come Dancing star Anton Du Beke. Dan Walker from Football Focus and newsreaders Mark Austin and Rishi Persad. TV presenters Andrew Cotter, Jeremy Kyle, Steve Rider and Rob Bonnet along with Michelin star chef, Jason Atherton.
Joining the celebs is TV and radio personality, Chris Evans along with two winners from the BBC Children in Need Super Swing Auction. The winners will play with both Chris and his Radio 2 Breakfast Show colleague Vassos Alexander.
Alongside the celeb line up, professional golfers Ernie Els, Justin Rose, Rory Mcllroy, Ian Poulter, Lee Westwood, Sergio Garcia and Henrik Stenson will be playing in the pre tournament Celebrity PRO-AM. Championship Director of the BMW PGA Championship, Jamie Birkmyre said: “It is a truly unique occasion that offers a superb blend of world class golf, sport and showbiz.”
